--DragNet README--

DragNet 1.0b2 release - October 1994

1994 Momentum Pty Ltd. All rights reserved.

Welcome to DragNet. DragNet provides a quick way to get text from your Macintosh
to the Notepad on your Newton using drag and drop over an AppleTalk network.

DragNet is freeware. No warranties are expressed or implied in this product. Use at your own risk. See the license below for restrictions on commercial distribution.

--Requirements--

DragNet requires the Drag Manager component from Apple Computer to be installed
on your Macintosh. Your Macintosh should be running either System 7.1 with Drag Manager installed or System 7.5 (which includes Drag Manager).

If you do not have Drag Manager, you may be able to ftp it from
ftp.support.apple.com as:

dts/mac/sys.soft/extensions/macintosh-drag-and-drop-1-1.hqx

DragNet also requires Newton operating system 1.1 or later.

--Getting started--

1. Download DragNet.pkg to your Newton via the Newton Connection Kit or similar.

2. Connect your Newton and Macintosh to the same AppleTalk network.

3. Launch the DragNet application on your Macintosh. A window with the DragNet logo in it appears.

4. On the Newton, open the DragNet package in the Extras drawer and tap on it. Tap on 'Connect' to display a network chooser. The name of your Macintosh should appear. Tap on it to select it. You can close the DragNet window at this point. Your connection will remain active until you tap Disconnect or the Newton is powered off.

5. The DragNet window on the Macintosh indicates that you have connected. Open a text document in SimpleText, select a portion of it and drag it to the DragNet window. Non-text items will be ignored by the DragNet application. To indicate the drag is in progress, you will hear a periodic click from the Newton (approximately every 2K bytes). When a drag is complete, you will be notified by a chime. You can queue drags.

6. The text will appear in the last note of the NotePad on your Newton in unfiled notes. Additional items will be added to the same note. If a note reaches the maximum size (4633 bytes), a new note will automatically be created by DragNet. New notes will be created on whichever store has been selected on the Card applet.

7. Two options are available in DragNet.

'Don't power off!' will stop your Newton from powering off whilst you are connected
to the DragNet server.

'New note' ensures that DragNet always creates a new note when you drag, instead
of appending to an existing note.

8. To disconnect, open the Extras drawer, tap on DragNet and tap Disconnect.

--Known limitations--

1. The 'Don't power off!' option is incompatible with the MessagePad 110 running
system 1.3 (344052). Contact us for an Apple supplied patch which resolves
this issue.

2. Each new note will have a display length shorter than the actual note, about half a screen high. To resize select the note bar at the bottom of the note and drag down. The Notes application will automatically resize the note.

3. Lots of large notes on the Newton will make your notepad very slow. This
is a limitation of the notepad.

4. DragNet is best suited for quickly getting small to medium amounts of text into your Newton notepad. The maximum drag size is 32k. For larger amounts of text, try the shareware Paperback application which creates standalone paperback books outside of the notepad.
